9月24日から27日までの4日間に渡って開催された「東京ゲームショウ2009」（TGS）。今年はレースゲームの大物タイトルが複数発表されたのが特徴だ。まずはソニー・コンピュータエンタテイメント（SCE）から。
最大のニュースは、プロデューサーの山内一典氏による発表が行われた、『PLAYSTATION 3』用の『グランツーリスモ5』（GT5）。発売日を10年3月とした。TGS時点での開発度は65%ということだが、ブース内には試遊台が用意されていた。
市販車、レーシングカー、コンセプトカーなど950車種以上が収録される予定で、ハイブリッドカーやEVも登場するという。コースは20ロケーション以上、70バリエーション以上を収録。GTシリーズ初のダメージ表現と車両の転倒、コース内可動オブジェクトなど、これまでの同シリーズからは表現的に大きく様変わりする形だ。
10月1日より発売がスタートしたのが、『PlayStation Portable』用の『グランツーリスモ」』（GT）だ。10年以上前に初代『PlayStation』用として発売された同名タイトルの移植と思われがちだが、PSP用に開発された完全な新作タイトルで、最大4人によるアドホック対戦機能なども有している。こちらは800車種以上、35コース・70バリエーションを収録。また、PSP版GTで入手したクルマをGT5に引き継げる機能も発表されている。
レーシングシミュレーターとは異なるが、「走り」でくくれるのが、11月1日に同じくSCEから発売されるPSP用「モーターストーム レイジングアイス」。PS3版がその爽快っぷりで人気を博し、現在は2作目まで発売されているルール無用の異種格闘オフロードレースゲームがPSPに登場である。
最大6人によるアドホック対戦に対応しており、こちらも熱くなること請け合い。マシンは8種類130タイプ以上から選択可能で、雪山を舞台にした12のマルチルート型（クルマのタイプなどによってそれぞれショートカットが異なる）の苛酷なコースが待っている。コースは逆走も可能ということだ。
そのほかSCEブースのGT5コーナーでは、メルセデスベンツ『SLS AMG』が日本初公開されていた。
